Mercedes GLA Concept’s Laser Headlights Double as Video Projector
“The Concept GLA’s headlights are both fitted with a laser-beam projectors.”
Mercedes-Benz’s new concept SUV, announced for the Shanghai auto show (April 21-29), is a highly capable and modern-looking vehicle, but where it really shines is in the area of laser headlights, which are so bold they could redefine in-car entertainment.
The Concept GLA’s headlights are both fitted with a laser-beam projector. It provides light for driving, but it can also project pictures or videos onto a screen or other surface.
Yes, that means you can park your car in front of a wall and watch a video on that wall from your car, effectively creating your own little drive-in theater.
Anything can be a source: your smartphone, the Internet, or a hard drive. But, it gets even better: The car also sports two HD cameras, which can also be used as a source for the video projection feature.
The cameras can also be removed from the car and fitted anywhere else.
The possibilities are endless. Mercedes-Benz gives one example: The technology could be used “to project the directional instructions from the navigation system onto the road in the form of arrows.”
Other than the innovative headlights, the Concept GLA has a 2-liter 208 hp engine, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
We don’t know when and in what form this concept will hit the market, but we’re hoping it’s happening soon. Because, you know, we can totally afford it.
